UK: Maccabees And Gavin Rossdale Honoured At The Ivors

LONDON – BMG writers The Maccabees have been awarded one of the most outstanding accolades in songwriting, with their song ‘Pelican’ named Best Contemporary Song at the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards.

The band received their award at a ceremony in London where fellow BMG writer Gavin Rossdale, the creative force behind multi-million selling rock band Bush was also honoured with an International Achievement Award.

The Ivor for The Maccabees tops a stunning 12 months for the Brighton indie-rock band, which comprises Orlando Weeks, Hugo White, Felix White, Rupert Jarvis and Sam Doyle. Their third album, Given To The Wild– the first to be published by BMG – has become their most successful album yet and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

‘Pelican’ emerged victorious in the Best Contemporary Song category against tough competition from the two other nominated titles, ‘Fitzpleasure’ by Alt-J, and Plan B’s ‘Ill Manors’, co-written by BMG songwriters Al Shux, Peter Fox, David Conen and Vincent Graf-Schlippenbach.

The Best Contemporary Song category is one of the most prestigious at the Ivors, with previous winners including Amy Winehouse and Tinie Tempah. Last year’s winning song was Lana del Rey’s ‘Video Games’.

Meanwhile Gavin Rossdale was honoured with an Ivor for International Achievement to mark his 20 years of success, particularly in the US and Canada, as front man of Bush and as a solo artist. The award was presented to him by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Rossdale said he was “honoured and humbled” to receive an Ivor.

Other BMG writers to be nominated included Natasha Khan, better known as Bat For Lashes, who was nominated in the category Best Song Musically and Lyrically for ‘Laura’, while Al Shux received an additional nomination  in the category Best Original Film Score for his work on the Ill Manors movie.

BMG Chrysalis UK SVP Alexi Cory-Smith said, “The Ivors are the ultimate accolade for songwriters, and so it is a distinction even to win a nomination. I am delighted that The Maccabees and Gavin have been recognised with awards. In both cases they are richly deserved.”

UK: Savages Release Highly Anticipated Debut Album

London, 9 May 2013 – Silence Yourself, the highly anticipated debut album from the BMG signed Savages, is released this week amidst a string of stellar reviews and growing support.

The London based four-piece, consisting of Jenny Beth, Gemma Thompson, Ayse Hassan, and Fay Milton have built a strong name for themselves on the back of a number of impressive live shows both in the UK, including a set at London’s Shacklewell Arms ,recorded for a promo video, and in the US at SXSW and Coachella earlier in the year.

Critically Silence Yourself has been lauded in virtually all corners with the bands intense brand of guitar rock reminiscent of Siouxise & The Banshees. Influential music blog Pitchfork scoring the album 8.7 arguing the album ‘proves that Savages are more than just talk. It’s one of rock’s most commanding and ferociously poised debuts in recent years, the work of a band whose outsized confidence and sharp clarity of vision doesn’t correlate with the short amount of time it’s been together.’

While The NME says, ‘the hypnotic rhythms of tracks such as ‘I Am Here’ entrance you until you agree that this isn’t a mere album, it’s a work of art.’

Savages are currently embarking on an extensive European tour before heading to the US in June. Full details are available here.

UK: Yeah Yeah Yeahs Release Fourth Album Mosquito

London, 15 April 2013 – The BMG Chrysalis signed Yeah Yeah Yeah’s release their hotly anticipated fourth studio album Mosquito today.

Following a number of impressive recent live performances in the run-up to the album’s release, including a rousing performance on Letterman and a headline appearance at Coachella, Mosquito has received strong reviews and media coverage, with everyone from the New York Times to the Guardian filing extensive features on the band.

In what is their first album since 2009’s critically acclaimed It’s Blitz!, the album marks both a return to New York, where the album was recorded in the band’s Brooklyn studio, and a return to their lo-fi origins leaving the Blondie-esque disco influences behind. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s will be playing a number of dates in the UK in April, including a headline spot at their self-curated I’ll Be Your Mirror festival in London, before taking in more shows in the US and Europe this summer. Full details can be found here.

UK: A True Legend – Alvin Lee

Commentary

Alvin Lee
(1944–2013)

Alvin Lee was unquestionably one of the greatest guitarists of his age.
He was there from the start. Without him there would have been no Chrysalis.

Alvin Lee played a pivotal role in the foundation of Chrysalis, the company I started with Terry Ellis in 1968. Chrysalis really began when Alvin’s group came up to Manchester in 1966 to play a small student blues club I ran. I signed them to a management contract, and, later, under their new name Ten Years After they subsequently joined both Chrysalis Records and Chrysalis Music.

UK: Legendary Guitarist Alvin Lee Is Dead

London, 7 March 2013 – Virtuoso guitarist Alvin Lee, once dubbed “the fastest guitar in the West”, has died at the age of 68 in a hospital in Spain.

The former frontman of blues-rock band Ten Years After played a pivotal role in the history of Chrysalis. The company’s co-founder, now Chairman of BMG Chrysalis UK, Chris Wright, started his career in the music business managing Lee in 1966. Lee went on to be one of the first signings to Chrysalis in 1969, a relationship he has maintained with the company to this day.

Lee’s virtuoso performance of ‘I’m Going Home’ at the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969 was later acclaimed as one of the weekend’s highlights. Following their appearance in the festival’s iconic documentary film, Ten Years After became a huge draw on the festival and arena circuit. In total they released ten albums with Lee as band leader.

Key to their success was always Lee’s guitar-playing. Said Wright, “He was unquestionably one of the greatest guitarists of his age and right up alongside Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, et al.”

Stockholm/Berlin, 10 October 2012 – On October, 31 the Swedish rock band Mando Diao will release their first album Infruset in their native language. The release of the all Swedish album is something they hold near and dear. “Mando Diao in Swedish is something we have wanted to do for a long time. The idea was developed after Norén was asked to compose a melody to a poem by Gustaf Fröding, who is known for his poems about alcohol and women, as part of the 100 year event marking the Swedish poet’s death. Together with Dixgård, he experienced an explosion of creativity during the composition process in their summer house barn in Dalafloda. In five days they recorded Infruset in collaboration with producer Björn Olsson. Norén describes the developing process as a very special one: “We don’t have especially good texts in English as we don’t handle the language, so to go over to our language to start with and then take care of these texts was magic.”

BERLIN – 31 May 2012: BMG Rights Management (BMG) – the joint venture music rights business formed by Bertelsmann and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) – has announced that the total number of music publishing copyrights it has under active management has exceeded one million in less than four years after the formation of the company in October 2008.

US: Goodbye Chuck Brown

NY, 18 May 2012 – Sadly, iconic performer, singer, guitarist and songwriter Chuck Brown passed away on May 16th at the age of 75 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Known as the “Godfather of Go-Go”, Chuck is considered to be the fundamental force behind significantly shaping the brand of funk music. Go-Go is a subgenre of funk, developed in and around Washington, D.C. in the mid- and late-1970s. Chuck combined Latin beats, African call and response chants and American Jazz, throwing in a touch of soul with a continuous drumbeat. This nonstop dance music is and has been a trademark of original creative music from the nation’s capital, and has gained Chuck Brown worldwide fans.

His most celebrated hits “Bustin’ Loose”, “Blow Your Whistle”, “Chuck Baby”, “Wind Me Up!” and “Love” amongst many others have not only been hits at the time, but also inspired many artists such as Nelly, Amerie, Eve, Jill Scott and Wale to imitate and implement Chuck’s Go-Go sound into their own music.

We will miss you.
